Art Institute lions to be removed temporarily for conservation work

CHICAGO (CBS) — The famous lions that flank the entrance steps of the Artwork Institute of Chicago will be coming down for a brief time for maintenance.

On Tuesday, June 14, the bronze lions will be removed from their plinths at the Michigan Avenue entrance to the esteemed art museum for conservation therapy. A crane will be coming to decide on them up and put them on a truck, wherever they will endure treatment offsite from an Artwork Institute conservation associate.

The remedy will contain a steam cleaning and the application of a wax coating for safety, the Artwork Institute claimed.

The Artwork Institute lions had been sculpted in 1893 by Edward Kemeys, and were put in in entrance of the Art Institute the subsequent 12 months. 

 As observed by the Chicago Park District, Kemeys (1843-1907) – a native of Savannah, Georgia – was recognised as the top American sculptor of wild animals in his time. As the Park District notes, the Chicago Tribune in 1894 quoted Kemeys as expressing the lions had been conceived of as guards for the setting up. The south lion, Kemeys told the newspaper, is “attracted by something in the length which he is closely seeing,” even though the north lion “has his again up, and is ready for a roar and a spring.”
