New silver greenback discoveries demonstrate what’s out there

Contemporary discoveries go on to excite the pastime, as observed in the newly confirmed 1794 Flowing Hair silver dollar not too long ago graded About Uncirculated 55 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. and stickered with a eco-friendly Qualified Acceptance Corp. label, a coin that will be a headliner at Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Aug. 19 Rarities Night auction in Costa Mesa, Calif.

The sale is component of the formal American Numismatic Association World’s Truthful of Dollars auctions, this year held the week following the convention by formal co-auctioneers Heritage and Stack’s Bowers in different profits.

Stack’s Bowers shared, “Discovered in an accumulation by a southern British isles dealer about 25 many years back, this piece is a newcomer to the census of known illustrations.” It was not outlined in the 2010 e book The Flowing Hair Silver Bucks of 1794: An Historical and Population Census Examine, where by Martin Logies of the Cardinal Assortment Academic Basis accounted for a surviving population of 140 to 150 illustrations in all grades. He cited 136 personal illustrations, estimating a complete populace of up to 150 with unaccounted for 1794 pounds.

The situation is wildly well-known as the 1st greenback struck, in lower mintage of 1,758 parts. It is ranked second runner-up in the 2019 version of 100 Greatest U.S. Coins by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. The finest-recognized example offered at a 2013 auction for just more than $10 million.

The auctioneer praised the discovery’s sleek fields, which exhibit “subtle flashes of satiny luster,” adding, “This remarkable coin is pretty well struck and preserved for the challenge, with excellent definition to Liberty’s hair and the stars on the obverse and almost entire denticulation all over both equally sides.”

Also in June, NGC discovered the fifth known case in point of a 1922 Peace, Modified Higher Aid greenback, graded About Uncirculated 50. All 1921 Peace dollars ended up struck in large aid, and options had been for the 1922 coins to carry the exact same significant aid structure by sculptor Anthony De Francisci.

Nonetheless, the lovely design proved ill-suited to mass generation and generation of the 1922 Peace, Superior Aid pounds stopped. George Morgan, main engraver at the U.S. Mint, experimented with modifications to greatly enhance the die daily life though retaining the artist’s vision. From these modified dies, Roger Burdette has documented that 3,200 examples ended up struck, which includes Proof strikes. Currently these Modified Superior Relief cash are detailed as Judd 2020 in United States Sample Cash.

The currently available illustration was noticed by a vendor sorting circulated pounds obtained in bulk. NGC explained on the discovery, “Perhaps what is most interesting is that we suspect extra of these intriguing coins are waiting to be discovered. A veritable treasure hunt is underway.”
